Amsterdam Airport

Amsterdam Airport is 15 kilometers southwest of the Dutch capital. It is situated in the Haarlemmermeerpolder and that is also where the name Schiphol comes from. A part of the former lake was named Schiphol, but what the name means is not completely clear. Some claim that it was a place where many ships perished. It is more probable that the name comes from ‘scheepschaal’, a ditch where ships were hauled from one lake to the other. Amsterdam Airport is the lowest lying major airport in the world, it is three to five meters below sea level.

Schiphol is the fourth largest airport in Europe when measured in total passengers, after Londen Heathrow, Paris Charles de Gaulle and Frankfurt. In 2004, 42.5 million passengers traveled through Schiphol. Amsterdam Airport already frequently gets the award of ‘best airport in the world’.

The British business newspaper, Business Traveller, has gladly called Schiphol the ‘best airport in Europe’ 22 times since 1980.

Schiphol has large shopping areas as a source of revenue and as an additional attraction for passengers. Schiphol Plaza is the shopping centre before customs, hence it is used by air travelers and non-traveling visitors.

Schiphol has its own mortuary, where the dead can be handled and kept before departure or after arrival. Since October 2006, people can also get married at Schiphol.

Regular taxis at Schiphol (AMS) have a fixed fare of 39€ from the airport to the city center of Amsterdam. However, there could be additional fees associated with your transfer.

As a result, it is preferable to book your Amsterdam airport taxi transfer in advance.
